Today, under the initiative of Hovhannes Martirosyan, head of Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body, a professional discussion was held focused on addressing the challenges related to the keeping of wild animals in captivity or semi-captivity without appropriate authorization in the Republic of Armenia, as well as planning further actions.
The meeting was organized as part of the efforts to discuss issues recorded during the session of the committee formed for the organization and implementation of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Key issues discussed included the legal implications of keeping wild animals without proper authorization, the necessity of strengthening oversight mechanisms, and the urgent need to enhance the legislative framework governing this field. Participants underscored the importance of clarifying the legal status of wild animals, streamlining the permitting and monitoring processes, and establishing clear accountability measures.
The participants also highlighted the significance of fostering practical cooperation among governmental bodies, private entities, academic institutions, and other stakeholders in order to develop and implement effective sectoral policies. Such policies should aim to ensure animal welfare, uphold biodiversity conservation efforts, and align with international obligations and standards.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Yerevan Municipality, the Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of the National Academy of Sciences, Yerevan Zoo, “Fauna-Zoo” LLC, and the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets.
